King's gambit - third step

In the first two annotated games on the King's gambit we have seen already the vulnerability of the house f7, in this game we have to observe how much there is yet to be discovered in the theory of the King's Gambit.

(1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4. Bc4 g4There are conditions to play the Muzio Gambit

(5.0-0 Bc5+) my opponent from São Paulo, the larget city in Brasil with a population exceeding 10 milion inhabitants, choose this move already playied four time in the correspondence chess.

(6.d4 gxf3 7.dxc5 Qe7)The black queen threatens to capture the pawn on c5 with a check and then capture the white bishop on c4 while the pawn in e4 is not in danger because after rook e1 the queen is pinned on the king; in 2001 the game Jobe, Tom B Vs. Arnold, Lee continued with 8.Qd4? Nf6 9.e5? fxg2 10.Kxg2? Nh5 and the white king became an easy target.

(8.Na3)I think that this humble move horse meets the principles of openness, the white should not worry of the pawn dubbed c5, but to bring into play as many pieces as possible, the knight on a3 is temporarily out of play, but defends the bishop c4, without losing time to retire should also frees up space to bring a rook on the central files!

(8. ... Qxc5+ 9. Rf2 fxg2 10. Bxf4!) the black pawn in g2 is a shield for the white king! (10. ... Nf6 11. Qf3) the queen goes in the Muzio's house, from this location creates a dangerous pressure on the square f7 (11. ... Rg8) peraphs with the idea Rg6 or Ng4 to keep the pinned rook in f2 but the black is in lagging of development and i think that the only way to continue the fight was to put a pawn in d5 with the idea to free the queen's side.

(12.Be3 Qb4 13.Qxf6 Rf8 14.Bxf7+ Rxf7 15.Qxf7+ Kd8 16.Bg5+)

Our journey to discover the secrets in the land of the King's Gambit continues in the next game.

Horoscopes chess league team match

Chess is an individual gamebut you can play the match in teams. On chessworld there are many many teams and leagues. A league in which I created my own team is one of the horoscopeIn honor of my European and Chinese zodiac sign I chose to call the team cancer and tiger.

One of my opponents last season was Edward Kong of Singapore, he played a good game showing off a new theoric move in the french opening, I have tried to weaken his position by exploiting the columns open, but I lost a pawn and I had seek counterplay on the king trying to tie the pieces to the defense of his weak pawns. Thanks to a careful defense Mr. Kong has foiled all my threats and he got a final of pawns on both side in which was not possible to make further progress.

(1.e4 e6 2.Nf3) This is a minor line of the French defense, the great masters prefer to play the main lines and it is from these lines recently theorized that can lead to new ideas and the possibility to surprise  the players poorly prepared.

(2. ... d5) In the code of the opening it is classified as C00, and should be studied before embarking on other adventures. A very popular idea for players to attack is given by the french gambit: 3. b4 cxb4 4. a3 Nc6 to take the pawn is not a good idea 5. axb4 Bxb4 6. c3 Be7 with a lot of tricks for the pawn, it's a good opening in the blitz because is not simple to understand the right set-up for the black pieces.

(3.Nc3) I met this move several times in my chess careerI have often responded with 3. ... d4ending withbeing in trouble after 4Ne2 c5 5. c3 Nc6 6. Qa4 (3. ... Nf6) So I chose to play a lot quieter, a Classical Steinitz French by inversion of moves (4.e5 Nfd7 5.d4 c5 6.dxc5 Nc6) my teachers taught me that it is better to attack the helpless pawn in the center rather than capturing the pawn doubled immediately (7.Bf4 Bxc5 8.Bd3 Bb4) Now the theory suggests to attack the center with the push of the pawn on f6, i chose to pin the knight but this move slows my development.

(9.O-O Nc5) Bxc3 was consistent with the previous move but i thought it was better to take the pair of bishop.

(10.Ne2) in the Van Gent - Rogers playied by correspondence in 1980 the white playied Nb5 Nxd3 11. Qxd3 a6 12. Nbd4 Bd7 13. Nxc6 Bxc6 Nd4 with a block on the house d4, When I played Nc5 I was not aware of that game.

(10. ... Nxd3 11.Qxd3 Bd7 12.c3 Bf8) my idea is to weaken the pawns on the queen side but if i play the bishop in c5 i can't play Na5 because there is a fork with b4, also Be7 was good!

(13.Ned4 a6 14.Rad1 Na5 15.b3 Qc7 16.Rc1 b5) I think that a good setup for an active play is Qb6-Nb7-a5-Be7-0-0 with the idea f6 to run with the knight in e4, The Black must open the center if he wants to take advantage from the pair of bishop, but if the white controls the outposts in d4 ed e5 with the knights the bishop of the light square will be a big pawn only.

(17.Rc2 Be7 18.Rfc1 Ba3 19.Re1 Be7 20.Rec1 Rc8 21.Bd2 Ba3 22.Re1 Be7 23.Rec1 O-O 24.h4 f6) After a skirmish the pawns go to search new space.
(25.Bf4 Ba3?!) Now i like Kh8!? with the idea to open the f or g file.
(26.Re1 Rce8 27.Rce2 f5) oh well i'll be lunatic, but there were too much pieces on e6 after g3 and exf6 with the idea Ng5 looking on a mate in h7.
(28.Ng5 Bc5) falling straight into the trap, i was worried that after b4 my bishop remained caged
(29.Ndxe6 Bxe6 30.Nxe6 Rxe6 31.Qxd5 Re8 32.b4 Bb6 33.bxa5 Bxa5) i chose to play with the bishop but 32. ... Nb7 with the idea to place a knight in e4 is interesting
(34.Bd2 Qe7 35.Bg5 Qf7 36.Bd2 Qh5 37.g3 Bb6 38.Kg2 Qg4 39.Bf4 h6 40.f3 Qg6 41.Kh3 Qf7) with the king in g8 I think I squeezed the most out of my position
(42.Qb3) good idea to give to the queen a safe place (42. ... Qc7) i think that 42. ... g5 43. hxg5 Qf5+ 44. Kg2 hxg5 45. Rh1 Qg6 46. Bc1 is not clear, ok we are playing correspondence chess, but I usually to play my games without moving the pieces on the board and at guess i prefered don't risk
(43.Rd2 Kh7 44.Qc2 Qf7) I feel the lack of my bishop of white house (45.Red1 R8e7 46.Rd6 Bc7 47.Rxe6 Qxe6 48.Qe2 Qc6 49.Qd3 g6) at the last i have to do this move to release my queen from the defence of the pawn (50.h5 Qe6 51.g4 fxg4+ 52.fxg4 Kg7) i'm ready to take back the pawn (53.Qxg6+ Qxg6 54.hxg6 Bxe5 55.Bxe5+ Rxe5) the endgame seem draw, if the pawn on the file h was on the file f i think that the black was a bit better but you can not have everything from the life (56.Rd6 a5 57.Kh4 Rc5 58.Rb6 a4 59.Rb7+ Kxg6 60.Rb6+ Kg7 61.Rb7+ Kg6 62.Rb6+ Kg7 63.Rb7+) there is no reason to leave my pawn to take the pawn on the life c.
So it's a draw between Sagitter Knight Vs. Cancer and Tiger Sorridente but we won the division and new exciting challenges expect us in the next season.

King's gambit - second step

I believe that the king's gambit must be learned by every beginner that like to get a master level. In the first lesson on the king's gambit we have seen what happens if the black does not coordinate the best defense. However, without needing to play the best movestry to get into the spirit of the King's Gambit.

(1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4) This was for centuries one of the openings more playied in the chess clubs, where amateurs were trying to emulate the great challenges of the players of the past, the white throw his gauntlet and the black accept without fear.

(3. Nf3 g5) This is the main line ot the king's gambit accepted, now there are two main line for the white 4. h4 to attack the black advanced pawns and (4. Bc4) i choose this line because i like to play the Muzio Gambit 4. ... g4 5. 0-0 gxf3 6. Qxf3 the white give up a knight to have a quick development.

(4. ... Nc6) it's an advise of Joseph Gallagher one of the most expert of the king's gambit.

(5. 0-0 d6 6. d4 Bg7 7. c3the opening has followed a logical development, the white has managed to complete the development of his king's side and he has take the control of the centre, the black has defended his plus pawn and he has developed his pieces on the free squares.

(7. ... Bg4) it's a mistake. 7. ... h6 is the right way to keep the pawn (8. Bxh7) mistake for mistake 8. Qb3 Na5 9. Bxf7+ Kf8 10. Qa5! was a good way to take back the pawn.

(8. ... Kxf7 9. Qb3 Ke7 10. Qxb7) this was my idea, to break the queen's side keeping the king in the middle of the board. I don't know which is the evaluation of the chess engines, i think that black is better though to play with the king exposed is not simple.

(10. ... Bxf3) next 10. ... Na5 Qb5 the pawn in h6 is unsafe, you see the useful of 7. ... h6 now.

(11. Rxf3) i don't want close the f file but there aren't enough developed pieces to continue the attack (11. ... Bxd4) i think that this move help the white, i like the idea to take the initiative but 11. ... Qe8 was a good resource because if 12. Qxc7 Qd7 and the queen can't avoid the change, but hey we are playing a king's gambit so i like the spirit behind eleven Keith's move.

(12. cxd4 Nxd4 13. Rf2) looking at c2 and e2.

(13. ... Nf6) a good square for the knight (14. Nc3) develop! develop!! develop!!!

(14. ... Qb8 15. Qa6) i can't accept to exchange my queen

(15. ... Qb6 16. Qc4 Kd7) an oversight. The king in e7 and the queen in b6 are under the attack of the knight in c3 that can jump in d5 with a double attack but the knight in f6 do a good guard, i think that next 16. ... Rhf8 the black has an edge.

(17. Qf7+ Kc6 18. Qxf6) an interesting game to discover the secrets of the king's gambit.

King's gambit - first step

I like to play my online games of chess on Chessworld because the website offer the possibility to chat with the playiers during the game without the pressure of the time, infact before to start the game you can choose how many days to think between one move and the other. So it's a simulation of a correspondence chess's game really.

One of the opportunities of Chessword is to offer at the guests a free game from his members, I like to give them some advice to improve their game or just a quiet game without considering the rating.

So next the game there is the possibility to annotate the game to study how to improve!

I thought the this portal of chess is the ideal place to offer to my guest some free lesson of chess.

So, let's take a look at our first game.

(1. e4 e5 2. f4We are in a King's Gambit, White offers a pawn to get free hand in the centre of the board, open the column f to attack the f7 point that at the start of the game is the weakest point of the formation of black.

(2. ... f6) So the King's Gambit is not accepted but it's a bad way to decline the invitation. Usually black play 2. ... exf4 with the idea to keep the pawn with 3. ... g5 or give it black with 3. ... d6.

(3. Nf3) the idea is to give the knight on the pawn so next fxe5 the Queen can check the king on the square h5 and take the pawn in e5 with a strong attack on the king's side.

(3. ... Bc5) it's a good idea to look for a counterplay, if 4. fxe5 fxe5 5. Nxe5 Qh4+! 6. g3 Qxe4+ 7. Qe2 Nf6 with a safe good game for the black.

(4. Bc4) taking aim at the target. (4. ... Ne7) now the pawn in e5 is without tactical defence also (5. Nc3) development is a priority in the open games (5. ... Nc6 6. fxe5 fxe5 7. Ng5) placing a trap. The only way to push away the offence of the white is to wall up the action of the bishop in c4, so 7. ... d5! 8. exd5 Na5! attacking the bishop, also the white has still a great position but it's the best way to try a counterplay, an attack to the undefeated peaces freeing up the pieces locked in the rear.

(7. ... h6?) extremely slow (8. Qf3 Rf8 9. Bh7+) with checkmate at the next.
